More Information about Annual Health Checks
Annual health screening is not essential for everyone -- particularly if you are under 45 years old, feel healthy, are not overweight, eat wisely, exercise regularly and have no family predisposition to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease or cancer. However, it is recommended by doctors to have regular checks of blood pressure and any specific area in which you may be at high risk on account of any of the above factors not being ideal. A regular review of any symptoms you might have may allow the earlier detection of disease or risk before a serious problem arises. On the other hand you should be aware that it is not possible to prevent or forestall all diseases with 100% certainty; but it may be worthwhile to check for obvious areas of risk.
The Doctor Today annual health check consists of half an hour with a clinician who will discuss any symptoms you have and try to identify any areas of risk by asking you various questions about your lifestyle and family history. Your temperature, blood pressure, pulse and blood oxygen saturation will be checked, followed by a physical examination and urine testing. Your height and weight will be measured and checked against the recommended norms. If no problems are found you will be reassured that all is well and will be given advice on any lifestyle changes that might be beneficial. If specific tests such as ECG, blood tests or xrays are required to further elucidate possible problems these will be at extra cost (eg cervical smear, prostate test, blood count, thyroid function test).
